Looking into Music and where it all has come from, is today and going into the future, I would like to reflect on some of the latest trends.

In one strand of Beatles lore, it was Ringo Starr who came up with the phrase ‘eight days a week’: an offhand joke about a working schedule so frantic it seemed to crush time. And while you watch this peppy, celebratory documentary from Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon, Rush), which focuses on the band’s notoriously hectic touring period, you feel pop history whistling past at speed.

music

A still from Ron Howard’s Beatles Documentary Eight Days a Week

Howard’s film follows the band from Ringo’s arrival in 1962 to their final paid live concert in 1966. Four lifetimes of live performance crammed into as many years, whittled down in turn to two hours of movie.

“We were force-grown, like rhubarb,” John Lennon laconically observes in one of many well-chosen snippets. It’s a line that chimes with every step Howard shows us the band taking – all the way to the recording of their transformative 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The film uncontroversially positions as the direct result of – and necessary push-back against – the exhilarating but punishing show-business whirl that led up to it.

That’s Howard’s film in a snapshot: its conclusions rarely make your head spin, but it meticulously shows its working out. (If it was an exam paper, it’d be impossible to dock it any marks.) Working with teams of researchers and interviewers, Howard has assembled the film from archive concert footage and interviews – some of it gleamingly restored – plus new conversations with both Ringo and Paul McCartney, and a line-up of variable informative celebrity talking heads.

A few seem like they’re there to give Howard’s largely US-centric film a more distinctive British flavour: it’s sweet that Richard Curtis feels his rom-com scripts owe a debt to the Beatles’ madcap early media personas, for instance, though it’s not clear why anyone watching this should be over the moon to hear it.

Beetles Influence

But others capture the breadth of the band’s influence without pulling focus from the phenomenon itself. Not least of all a brief word from Sigourney Weaver. Which the actress reminisces about a 1965 concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Over the top of contemporary news footage that grainily but unmistakably places her delighted 12-year-old self at the scene.

Other than obligatory signposts to epoch-defining events like the Kennedy assassination, there’s little historical context – but that’s because Howard understands the band is the historical context.

The phenomenon of their live appearances – not just the concerts themselves, but the cheeky press conference preludes, and the hysterical, garment-rending fallout – itself defines the era with a spiky precision.

music

Civil Rights Movement

The mid-century Civil Rights Movement becomes part of the story. For example, because the band’s manager Brian Epstein included a line in their touring contracts.  It specified the band would not play to segregated crowds.

Whoopi Goldberg, who was at the famous 1965 Shea Stadium gig, says she “never thought of them as white guys,” and describes them as “colorless” – one of a few trains of thought you wish Howard had allowed through a few more stations.

Likewise, the film shrewdly draws a line between the Beatles’ mischievous sense of humor. Their long-time producer George Martin’s earlier life recording alternative comedy. (Martin had worked with the Goons, an enormous influence on the band’s growing lyrical eccentricity in that period. As well as their off-the-cuff ribbing of strait-laced reporters.) But like many other ideas here, it’s tantalizingly flicked through, then shelved a little too early.

music

Vitally, though, the songs themselves get their due. Some appear in pleasingly unfamiliar forms. The film’s title track first turns up with Lennon and McCartney’s experimental oohed introduction, before segueing into its better-known version.

Plus there’s the straightforward pleasure of hearing the tracks play through a cinema sound system. – When Sgt. Pepper’s opening chords slam into your chest, the album really feels like an act of resuscitation.

What The Beatles did with the new lease of life that record gave them isn’t a matter for this film. But if Howard decides to address it in another, it’d be very welcome.

MY WHOLE FAMILY CAN’T BELIEVE I REALLY LEARNED ALL I HAVE IN LESS THAN 3 DAYS

Pastor JD Loveland, Santee, CA, USA

JDDear Robin,
I just wanted to Thank You for the incredible program that you have put together.  I must say that you over delivered on this one.   Although I’ve played guitar “by ear” since I was 12 ( I’m 61..you do the math) I’ve never played piano before in my life.  (I take that back, I tried to play chop sticks when I was in my teens but couldn’t get it right).  I’ve always thought it was too difficult and for some reason I was never able to get the hang of reading music so playing piano was just a dream I have had all my life but thought was out of my reach.
Transparent-line-break
My grandson (6year old) started piano lessons so we bought him a nice keyboard for when he comes to visit and I don’t exactly know how I found your offer on the internet but I did.  At $39 I thought it was too good to be true but I thought what’s the most I could lose ($39) so I gave it a try.
Transparent-line-break
I couldn’t believe it, and neither could my wife!  Within an hour, I was making music.  I’m not ready for the public yet but I am actually playing chords to rhythm and  The amazing BROKEN CHORD BALLAD lesson blew me away to see how really simple it is.  That one lesson intro and about 1 hour of practice has me sounding like I’ve been playing for a while and my whole family can’t believe I really learned all I have in less than 3 days!
Transparent-line-break
I’ve always thought most of the testimonials  that I read online are more hype than fact but Piano for All is everything you said it is and more (and I am only on Book 1 about page 35)  I will tell everyone I know, who’s ever thought about playing piano or keys that this is the real deal and I hope if you use this testimonial that all who read it will believe me.  Most people who know me personally will testify that I’m an honest man who tries to always tell the truth. God bless you,

I HAVE YET TO FIND ANOTHER PIANO COURSE THAT MAKES IT THIS EASY!

T. Dwight Kidd, Alabama, USA

T-DwightRobin, I’ve been working with the course for about a week now, and it’s incredible. Just the practice aids and the different scales and memory techniques in Book 9 are worth the price of the course, alone! There are two things that make this course stand out. First, all the video and audio files are embedded in the lesson. I have yet to find another piano course that makes it this easy. It’s so nice not to have three files going at the same time!

Transparent-line-break
The second thing is that you actually get to play in each lesson! And the songs are not “Mary had a Little Lamb” types! From the Beatles to Beethoven, it’s all there. I have several piano courses that I have ordered over the internet. This is the one I use because it makes learning fun! I’m amazed! Once you get the rhythms down, you really can sound like a pro! Great fun! Thanks for making this available at such a reasonable price. Anyone who doesn’t grab this up is going to go the long way home! Joy!

Within minutes you could be discovering the secrets of people
who can sit down at a piano and effortlessly play
any song in any style.

From GuitarHippies‘ Alan Cooper

Hey good people! My name is Alon, I’m 28 and I play mainly the guitar, piano, and harmonica. In the last few years, I traveled through four different continents with my guitar while performing and teaching music. Currently, I am based in sunny Tel Aviv, Israel. The GuitarHippies mission: To get you to enjoy your musical journeys to the fullest, and improve in the fastest way. Cheers!

So I assume that if you’re reading the blog you enjoy music, probably as a hobby like me – and you like to play around mostly at home and with friends. Now honestly, we all know that singing can really take our “show” up a notch and make people around us enjoy the time listening to us on a whole new level. > The thing is – most people never really felt the experience of singing well and therefore we mostly lack the confidence to do it. So today, I want to share my Superior Singing Method review with you, which will let you do that step up yourself – into being a confident singer who sounds great.

When you internalize it and decide that you set your sights on the goal of learning how to sing, now it’s just a matter of finding the right guide to help you do it. Now, as someone who tried learning how to sing both with a face to face vocal teacher and with an online course – I will give you my honest thoughts about the pros and cons of both.

Who’s the Teacher Behind Superior Singing Method?

Aaron Anastasi is the founder of Superior Singing Method. He’s a famous vocal coach (and an actor actually, IMDB) from Los Angeles, California. He has a successful YouTube channel with currently over 5,000,000 views and almost a 100K subscribers.

Anyway, after researching about him and the course I understood that this guy knows what he’s talking about (unlike many of the phonies you see on YouTube) and decided to get the course.

What I think about the teacher: I like Aaron’s style since he speaks very coherently and gets his message across in a nice way and without blabbering. If you like watching YouTube lessons so you know this isn’t something trivial. You can check him out in his YouTube channel and judge for yourself. I still follow his channel even though I finished the main singing course two years ago since he regularly uploads good stuff and singing tips.

How is the Course Built?

  • 8 Weeks of training, where every week is dedicated to 7 lessons on a different singing topic. For example, Week 3 – improving your vocal tone.
  • Short and to the point videos that you watch every day and teach you a new tip or a concept. Each video is on average 5 minutes long.
  • After each daily lesson there is a vocal exercise that you sing along to. It’s also about 6-8 minutes long.
  • Also, you get a full, detailed ebook in the size of a real book that is sort of a “Singing for Dummies” 101 guide for beginners. It’s not a must read but if you also like reading and not just videos then you’ll like it like I did.

What I think about it: I really liked the structure of the course. It is very easy to follow and understand, it shows you a “course progress” bar, and every weekI gradually felt how I was constantly improving and my favorite songs that I like to sing while playing guitar (from Beatles to Dylan to Coldplay, Rock, Pop, some Jazz) just began to sound much better. I also felt how I could sing for a longer time without feeling “worn out” on the inside of my throat, thanks to the good techniques and habits I learned.

+ I felt constant improvement starting from week 2 and I just kept getting better. I am now proud to sing my favorite songs in front of people – which is something I never even dreamt about a few years ago.

+ It’s a very high-quality course from a world-class vocal teacher with a large YouTube following. Trustworthiness you just can’t get when taking lessons in the neighborhood.

+ It’s affordable! At 99$, for the price of just two lessons with my face-to-face New Orleans vocal coach – I got 8 weeks full of daily lessons and exercises that have proven to make me improve way faster.

+ The structure of the course is easy to follow and will motivate you to improve and to keep going. The members area is built in a professional level as well.

+ You can watch the course from your tablet or mobile easily. I actually liked doing some of the singing exercises while driving.

+ It’s very time-efficient. You don’t have to drive somewhere for a lesson. You don’t have to wait for it to come in the mail since it’s accessible instantly from everywhere. The lessons are short and to the point. About 15 minutes a day and you’re done – and that’s really all you need in order to see massive improvement as long as you’re consistent.

+ The course comes with a large PDF e-book that summarizes all the points and tips from the course, something which I found helpful to refer back to even long after I finished the course.

+ They offer a bunch of follow up courses to take your singing even farther – my favorite was the “Superior Harmony”course where I learned how to sing along with other people, recognize different musical intervals that sound best when singing together, etc.

+ There’s a 60-days full money back guarantee in case you don’t dig it.

– Even though the lessons are very affordable compared to face-to-face lessons and compared to other online singing programs, 99$ is still a large amount of money, so think for yourself if you are really into singing.

– Not really a con – but the course demands dedication every day (or close to every day) for two months. 10-15 minutes a day is not much and it’s extra time that everyone has, but again – make sure that you really want it and willing to put in the efforts.

The Superior Singing Method Review – VERDICT

I finished the Superior Singing Method course two years ago, in early 2015, and it was really the kickstart to my singing. It did not only promise, but also delivered a tremendous improvement in my singing and made me confident, for the first time in my life, to sing in front of other people when I play music. And I wish I can let you feel the feelings you get when you get those “wow, you got a great voice!” sincere comments from people around – but you’ll have to try it for yourself and see…

Remember that learning how to use your voice is like learning any musical instrument – and it’s not instant. So while you WILL see tremendous results very fast, these 60 days are not the end of your journey – but only the beginning.

It was really hard to find anything bad to say about the course. If you want to learn how to sing– by all means you’ve found what you’re looking for. Thanks to technology that’s making stuff so affordable and accessible in our times.

I give Superior Singing Method the GuitarHippies ranking of five stars.

Learn To Sing With These Tips In Mind

Don’t believe the mindset that learning how to sing can be hard. Learning the art of song may seem like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be! The hardest part of vocal mastery may actually be convincing yourself that you can actually sing! Once you’ve got that part down, all the rest is just a matter of a little work. Here are several things you need to remember if you want to tune your voice properly to become a great vocalist.

Always remember to warm up. Your vocal chords are just like any other muscle; they need to warm up before heavy use. To warm up, you can do simple scales, choose a relatively easy song, or hum. Don’t try to shock your voice by trying to go up and down your entire range right off the bat. Pace yourself. Only try to push the boundaries of your range (the lowest and highest notes)… gradually.

Sing every chance you get. Practice is very important in any art or discipline, and singing is no exception. In addition to “official,” undistracted practice, try to work on your voice while you do other things too, like while cooking, doing chores or driving. Making this a near constant element in your life will condition your voice, making singing basically second nature, and help take away some of the “seriousness” of it all. This will help you immensely with stage fright and performance anxiety as well, which brings us to:

Practice in front of others. Many first timers find that gathering enough confidence to perform in front of an audience for the first time is one of the biggest hurdles to leap. Start out by recording yourself until you are happy with your results then graduate to rehearsing in front of family or friends you feel comfortable with. With time, you will eventually build a steady confidence, helping you to handle the stage in front of larger groups.

Watch your posture. The quality of your voice depends on many factors; your posture is one of them. Keeping your body in the proper position allows for the best air flow possible. Keep your back straight, and keep your gaze more or less parallel to the floor; don’t look up or down. Keep both of your feet planted flat, and don’t shift your weight back and forth between them. If you are performing seated, don’t lean back in your chair. Keep the upper half of your body straight, the same way you would do if you were standing. Try to sit closer to the edge of your seat; this way, you won’t “pinch” your diaphragm, allowing you to project more powerfully. Always position yourself in a way where your body provides minimum “resistance” to your breathing and voice..

Stay hydrated. When you let your throat get dry, your voice is impacted in a very negative way. It can get hoarse or raspy, and forgetting to hydrate before going out on stage can, over time, cause permanent damage to your vocal cords. To avoid this, always remember to drink plenty of water every time before practice or performance. Take small sips of water during a session as well, as there are many stage factors that will dehydrate you. Avoid taking substances that can dehydrate you, especially right before singing, such as coffee and alcohol. Milk is another to avoid as it causes the esophagus to build up mucus. There are many other health benefits to drinking plenty of fluids, so for your own sake, drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Keep your lungs healthy. There are many things that can, over time, slowly cause your lungs to deteriorate. Smoking for one, is one thing you should not be doing; even without considering how it hurts you as in general, it will prematurely shorten the life of a great set of vocal chords. This is especially important if you want to sing higher notes. Regular cardiovascular exercise, like aerobics or running, helps increase your lung capacity and healthy.

Take from other singers/artists, but develop your own style. While there’s nothing wrong with trying to incorporate certain aspects of the voices of other artists you admire into your own singing style – it’s also important that you develop your own unique style. Practice in a fashion that is truly yours. If you want to learn how to sing well, it isn’t about perfectly reproducing the performance of another performer; it’s about putting your own spin on a song that fits your unique sound.

Set goals, but know your limits. One thing that can really help with motivation is setting goals. Goals can be different for everyone, depending on what they want to achieve, what they find difficult, or feel they need to work on. You should also make sure that you aren’t subjecting your vocal cords to undue stress by trying to reach notes that you aren’t capable of or ready for. Remember, everyone’s voice is different. Some vocalists naturally have a wider vocal range than others. You can always choose songs that are out of your vocal range – up or down in a different key to make them more accessible to you.

Consider online singing lessons. Before you go out and spend a wad of cash on a face-to-face vocal instructor, consider learning how to sing better with the most comprehensive and up-to-date singing software like Singorama and/or Superior Singing Methodfirst. The entire course will probably cost you about the same amount as one session with some singing instructors. But with the programs, you receive every technique and method there is to know about singing – with the luxury of practicing at your own leisure. Experiencing vocal breakthroughs no matter what stage your voice is at.

Watch other singers perform. Before you ever started singing, you might not have noticed some of the nuances that professional artists did while performing, like their posture or their breathing technique. Armed with the basics of the methodology, you can now look at the artists you idolize and be able to analyze why they perform the way they do. Watching other singers can also help you with your own technique targeting certain factors that you might be having difficulty with.

While you can’t expect progress overnight, anyone with the right mindset, enough determination, and access to the right material and information can learn to sing quickly and easily. Don’t get frustrated if you don’t progress as quickly as you expected to; everyone has to start somewhere, and if you want to reach your goals higher and faster, check out these programs guys and gals!!
